Steve moved to Brighton in the late 1980s, living in various hostels and squats; busking, enjoying roast dinners, drinking beer, welcoming a new baby into the world, and doing art. Several of his letters from 1988 were written from “The Rock” while he was either enjoying a cold pint or manning an art exhibition downstairs where several of his collages were shown. Having recently returned from Spain, and after a stint in north London, he wrote how he was loving Brighton life, being by the sea again, hearing the seagulls squawking... so much great live music and other interesting stuff going on. So, doing this first retrospective, 19 years after his death, at The Yellow Book in Brighton, feels perfect (and we’re sure he would approve of the venue).
